| Transit of goods via Caspian Sea has gained momentum (Economic Abrar , January 7,2003) Aftab-e-Yazd daily reported that a contract allowing for transit of 200,000 tons of cotton has been inked between Khazar Shipping Co. and Uzvneshtrans of Uzbekistan . The first lot of this contract has been loaded in Aktau destined to Bandar Abbas on MV Iran Delir . In the loading ceremony of this transit movement the officials of Uzbekistan took part together with Port Aktau officials . All shipments are containerized and further inside Iran the carriage of the goods is assured by Iranian Railways using the railroad between newly built port Amirabad and Bandar Abbas . |

| 10 new ports and jetties to be built in the country(Economic Abrar , January 5,2003) The Minister of Roads and Transportation deputy in charge of construction and development of airports and seaports told reporters that some Rls. 314,400 m has been allocated this year to this end . Abdollah Hashem told IRNA that out of this amount about 52% has been materialized. He noted that in addition to this some Rls. 3,110,000 m have been put aside to implement the comprehensive ports scheme and we hope by spending this budget through third and fourth plan we could respond positively to national needs to ports .He asserted that currently some 10 ports and jetties are under construction in the country , including Jetty and Harbor of Martyrs Kalantari , Beheshti in Chabahar , Amirabad and Anzali ports , Ganaveh , Deilam, Lengeh , and Kangan . He expressed hope that by completion of the schemes Chabahar port will see berthing of vessels up to 60,000 tons .He added that the breakwater of this port has been completed up to the length of 1,250 M and further 800 M of the fifth phase has just been initiated to be constructed. |

| Road Transport restructuring plan is passing final stages and to be published soon . (Economic Abrar 31st Dec.2002) The head of planning and education bureau of Transports and Terminals Org.(TTO) said here that a research project is under progress to evaluate and plan future development of road sector . The targets defined for the project are maximizing safety standards , betterment, maintenance and extension of national road network and enhancing the level of services in road transport and its implementation is to be carried out in eleven steps which consist of comparative studies with other countries ,edition of future programs , setting qualitative and quantitative targets , defining the position of road transport within national transport system . Most of these steps have been already fulfilled . According to preliminary basis , the targets have to be met by 2009-2010 . |

| 6 New Jetties Commissioned in Bandar Anzali 6 new diversified and multipurpose jetties were commissioned in Bandar Anzali. The annual capacity of Bandar Anzali's jetties increases from 2.5 million tons of non - oil products to 5 million. Moreover, the level of loading and unloading of oil by - products will double to 2 million tons/year. In other words Bandar Anzal's jetties capacity has increased over 100 percent. |

| Iran Air to be Semi - Privatized TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran is to shake up its airline industry, opening state carrier Iran Air to the private sector and merging small companies into a second large airline, an aviation official said yesterday. "We are going to merge our small companies into one large private company and open up Iran Air to private capital, creating a new national semi-state firm." Behzad Mazaheri, director of the Givil Aviation Authority, told the state radio. A part from Iran Air, the country has a dozen small airlines mainly serving the provinces with leased Russian aircraft, which were set up after the end of the Iraqi - imposed war in 1998. Iran Air has been in financial difficulties for several years, and has problems servicing its fleet made up largely of ageing Boeings because of a U.S. trade embargo on Iran. |

| Foreign Transport Companies Can Open Branches in Iran TEHRAN - Director general for legal affairs of the Transport and Terminal Organization, Valiollah Rostami, announced here yesterday that foreign transport companies can register their branches or representative offices in Iran after adapting to local conditions and regulations. He said, due to the new economic and political situation in Iran, and the need for absorbing foreign investment, new laws have been devised in recent years to allow foreign firms to open branches or representative offices in the Islamic Republic. According to the article of association, only those foreign companies who are recognized as legal entities in their own countries can register or open branches in Iran, provided that their governments offer reciprocal facilities to Iranian firms. |

| Bandar Abbas / Bandar Imam Khomieni Feeder Service A new container feeder service by sea is launched between B. Abbas as the country's main container hub and B. I. Khomeini by IRISL. The line has deployed M.V. "Raisali" with 143 TEU capacities. It is yet to be known if IRISL intends to open its feeder service to other operators or would rather to reserve the new facility to its own traffic |

| Transit Statistics Released The total quantity of cargo transited through Iran has increased by 14.7% & 8.8% respectively weight and value wise amounting to 2`140`000 MT and 5770 million USD during last Persian calendar year starting from 20th of March each year ending at 20th March next year. |

| Fine on delayed shipment ,Customs Circular Customs head office fixed the amount of fine for delayed trucks & goods in transit via Iran at Rls. 100.000 to Rls. 200.000 per truck. It is to note that the Entry customs defines a period within which the cargo should report to exit customs and before this circular the exit customs used to define a self - claimed amount from the late arrivals. |
